Gardmore Abbey

Gardmore Abbey
Acrylic, 21" x 27"

It is always great to be able to work on an archetype, and with the cover to Gardmore Abbey I got to have fun with two: Orcs and a Giant. Better still the Giant had two heads, being the feared Ettin.

With this piece I really enjoyed the push and pull between the cool/warm colours and the dynamism that helps create.

The line sketch with cover template overlaid.

  1. Great stuff again Ralph- like how a two headed creature gives you the opportunity to explore two movements/directions at once. A minor point- value wise I'm reading the goblin on the left as behind the main figure, but his axe puts him in front of the leg. However I love the colours in the background- great mood.

  2. Thanks Tommi - yeah the two head dichotomy did allow to play that up.

I wanted the figures to overlap, maybe this could read clearer...

  3. Great to see the pencils! The thing I have always loved about your work is that you can include so many little details supporting each characters personalities and sooo many colors and yet your compositions hold together nicely no matter how busy they get :)
