The Sacred Pool

The Sacred Pool
Acrylic, approx 12" x 17".
Original artwork for sale.

Fantasy Flight Games have just announced the release of the latest Talisman boardgame supplement The Sacred Pool , which in turn means that I can now share my cover artwork.

The image follows a similar format to The Reaper and The Frostmarch, featuring a strong central figure, with three heroes in the foreground. However this time we have a 'goodie' as the main character, and a full scene, rather than a movie poster-style collage.

I have enjoyed working on the whole Talisman series, it is always great to be associated with one particular product, especially when it is painting the covers. This is one of my favourites so far, maybe because it was a slight change of pace to do something 'softer'.

  1. Another great piece Ralph. My only criticsim/query is what the black knight is looking at? He seems to be looking up a bit, but not at the water spirit, nor does he seem paticularly engaged with the others in the group. Is that a deliberate choice to suggest something out of frame? Or is he just that tough he doesn't care about pathetic elves/ humans etc? It would be interesting to see your sketching processes one day- hint hint :)

  3. Thnaks for the comments.

    Tommi:Glad you like it.

The idea was that the Knight is distracted by the appearance of the 'Lady' emerging from the water, and is beginning to turn to face her. I could have given him a more extreme tilt to the head, but wanted to keep his features clearly visible. Normally you can aid the line-of-sight by the indication of a pupil - not so easy with empty sockets!

Atom: Thanks a lot. Oh, and the piece is still available for sale....

  6. Fantastic work as always on the Talisman covers.
I really like the way you have the cloak of the Death Knight and the neck of the white stallion maintain the sweep of the released birds & butterflies. Love the palette too.

  7. Thnaks Marc, and I'm pleased you picked up on the compositional elements. I enjoyed going for a more stylised, design, approach than I would normally.

  8. I have always wanted a 2nd edition copy and was hesitant to buy a new version. When I saw the artwork and read one review I was sold ... excellent work! I bought the main set and the pool to start. So excited. Been 20 years waiting...
